Living a Metaphysical Life

What does it mean to you to “live a metaphysical life”?

Are you familiar with the concept of metaphysics or is it puzzling to you, maybe even frightening?

Years ago, I attended a dream interpretation group where we learned to interpret the meaning of symbols in our dreams.  Our leader suggested that we look at our life in this way:  i.e. “If my life was a dream, what would it mean?”

Looking back, I believe that this was my introduction to metaphysics—the understanding that life has a meaning beneath the surface and that it can be viewed from a higher perspective.

In the simplest terms, metaphysics means “beyond the physical”.  It’s a study of perception beyond the five senses, seeing beyond appearances, discerning a subtle meaning that isn’t black or white, but shades of grey.

Spiritually, metaphysics is about our inner journey – how things relate to us as individuals; our ability to choose our own actions, thoughts, and destiny; how to live from the truth within.

Anything can be looked at metaphysically - from the lyrics of a song to a Scriptural story to everyday experiences in our lives.

So, how do we live a metaphysical life?

1.     By living consciously, with awareness

a.       Take time each day for self-reflection whether through meditation, prayer, or simply sitting in the silence.  This helps you to gain control over your thoughts and connect with your inner nature.

b.     Become fully present in each moment.  Pause when your energy is low, when you’re dwelling on the negative, when things aren’t going smoothly for you, and notice what you’re thinking and feeling.  Ask how you can see the situation differently or shift to a more positive state of consciousness.  Then take the action you are guided to take.

2.      By living responsibly

a.       Rather than blaming others, take responsibility for your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

b.     Remember that it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you choose to think about what happens to you that determines the quality of your life.

3.      By seeing beyond appearances

a.       Instead of judging by appearances, look deeper.  Ask: “What’s happening here?  What am I feeling?  What is another way of looking at this situation—a more positive way?”

b.     Ask for divine guidance to see beyond appearance.

4.     By focusing on the good in every situation

a.       Believe that there is good in every situation, even if you can’t yet see it.

b.      Focus on the good.  Express gratitude for the blessings in your life; use positive statements, affirming that you have all the strength you need to handle whatever happens in your life; trust that all is unfolding as it’s meant to.

5.      By being willing and committed to learn and grow, to be the light are created to be.

a.       Be willing to break free of old limiting patterns and ways of thinking.

b.      Be willing to stretch your mind and heart to embrace possibilities.

c.       Commit to expressing the highest and best within yourself in every situation in your life.

Living a metaphysical life is not always easy, but the rewards are amazing! You will find yourself living in peace and harmony with yourself and others.  You will experience deeper meaning and purpose in your life.  You will become a positive influence—a light—in our world!
